Ever heard about the Dragon Boat Festival? If not, here’s quick primer. It’s among the three main festivals of Taiwan; the other two being the Moon Festival and the Chinese New Year. In case you’re wondering, the grand celebration that takes place in the month of June every year is every bit amazing as it sounds.

Origins

Legend has it this festival is celebrated to honor Qu Yuan, the patriotic poet who was a minister to the Zhou Emperor. Based on the folklore, Qu Yuan lost the emperor’s trust and was sent into exile. He wrote patriotic poems whilst traveling. After hearing, that the Zhou Emperor lost the battle against the Qing dynasty, Qu Yuan threw himself into Milou River. The locals then rowed their boats to save Qu Yuan from drowning. And thus the tradition of dragon boat racing was born.

Feasting on Zongzi

During this grand festival, locals prepare and relish Zongzi – a dish comprising rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves. Its various fillings include egg, mushrooms, sweetened bean paste, sweet potato, walnuts, dates, and fruits.
