Tour of the most bookish cities in the world to catch up with the spirit of the season

We are really excited about the Sharjah Book Festival, and think that we should take you on a tour of the most bookish cities in the world to catch up with the spirit of the season. Let’s make this season all about visiting bookstores, writers’ museums and all those places that hold a pride of place in the classics. So get ready for some literary wanderlust.

London, England

Apart from all the other tourist attractions, London has a lot in store for a book enthusiast. If you have spent days and months poring over Shakespearean classics, then you must definitely head to the Globe theatre. But if you have spent your waking hours reading the great works of literature by Charles Dickens, then Dickens House is sure to keep you enthralled. And all those Harry Potter fans, do not miss visiting Platform 9 and 3/4 in King’s Cross Station. Any self-respecting book lover must spend some time at the Poets’ Corner in Westminster Abbey, the burial place of Edmund Spenser, Charles Dickens, and Alfred Tennyson.

Prague, Czech

Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic, is an utterly compelling holiday destination. But what attracts an avid reader is the fact that it is also the birthplace of the immensely popular writer Franz Kafka. As you explore this wonderful city, you will find many references to the author. While passing ornate cathedrals, you will get to see a giant rotating statue of Kafka’s head.

Bath, England

Are you one of those ladies who spent her teenage years dreaming about Mr. Darcy? Well, then you are not alone. There have been very few literary characters that have caught the fascination of the womenfolk like Darcy has. But we know that they don’t make men like that anymore. So paying a visit to Austen-central is the closest you can get to this iconic romantic hero. This place gives you all the leads you would ever require about this literary resident. When you walk through the streets of Bath, you would feel as though you are living out a Regency romance.

Edinburgh, Scotland

Edinburgh is an enchanting city with a lot of excitement for an ardent literature fan. This fascinating city is home to many Harry Potter sites, including the Elephant House Café where J.K. Rowling penned many of his novels. Drive to Greyfriars Kirkyard to have a look at Tom Riddle’s grave. But that’s not it, if you are a lover of mystery, there are many more things to catch your attention. Deacon Brodie’s Tavern will show you the inspiration behind a Gothic classic.
