From the wonders of the ancient city of Petra to the majestically barren Wadi Rum and the vast Dead Sea, Jordan is a gorgeous country. More importantly, it's just a three-hour flight away. So if you haven't seen the heart-shaped Hashemite Kingdom yet, perhaps these pictures will inspire you to be there this Eid.

Petra

The rose city of Petra was a prosperous mercantile empire until a massive earthquake levelled the city – although many archaeologists claim its decay had begun well before then. Petra remained unknown to the world until 1812. Now the most popular tourist attraction in Jordan, Petra still preserves the greater part of its mystery. The recent discovery of the ‘Petra scrolls’ – 152 papyrus scrolls – is one of the reasons behind its allure. Being the location for an Indiana Jones flick is another.

Wadi Rum

Follow in the footsteps of Lawrence of Arabia as you explore the dramatic landscape of Wadi Rum. Its unending sand dunes, dramatic canyons, incredible mountains and inscriptions dating back to 4-5th century BC will leave you spellbound.

Jerash

While the Middle East contains other surviving Roman cities that boast similar architectural treasures, the ancient ruins at Jerash are famous for their remarkable state of preservation. Enough structures remain intact for archaeologists and historians, and even casual visitors, to piece together ancient life under the rule of an emperor.

Dead Sea

What’s more, its mineral-rich black mud is known for therapeutic properties and is used for the treatment of a number of ailments and allergies. Of course, we already told you all this.
