If you truly want to experience a destination, sampling their traditional food is a great way to begin. Argentinian cuisine is one of the most famous in the world and it’s not just because of their legendary steak, which by itself is enough reason to go there. Food is a huge part of the Argentinian culture. The charming destination is slowly making its way up so many travellers’ bucket lists. No matter what intrigues you to think about a holiday there, you must try the following delicacies during your visit.

Asado

Asado, which literally translates to barbecue, is a great way to enjoy the Argentinian meat. A typical Asado will have all kinds of meat grilled to perfection. The best way to experience it is with the locals as it is an important social event in Argentina that brings together friends and family. An Argentinian  home provides the ultimate Asado experience, but if you don’t get the chance there are some restaurants which serve a parrillada (everything on a small portable grill right in front of you).

Argentinian Steak

Argentina’s meat is world-known, and should be your priority when you get there if you are a non-vegetarian. When you sit down to enjoy an Argentinian steak, you can expect a tender grass-fed steak of very high quality. Head to Parrilla, a restaurant that specializes in beef, in Buenos Aires for a luxury steak dinner. The first glance at the menu can be quite overwhelming, but know that the entire menu is surreal.

Empanadas

Empanadas or turnovers are the ultimate street food in Argentina. They are the best go-to snack during your holiday. You will find different kinds of Empanadas all over the country and it is guaranteed that they are all delicious. The iconic pastries can be filled with meat and olives, chicken, cheese, spinach, corn, or apples too. The best ones can be found at La Cacina in the Recoleta neighbourhood of Buenos Aires.

Matambre Relleno

Imagine a long, thin slice of meat rolled with a filling of spinach, onions, herbs, sliced carrots, and hard-boiled eggs. Matambre is a dish that is unique to Argentina and is a traditional signature delicacy. The name Matambre comes from the local saying “matar el hambre,” which translates to “killing one’s hunger.” It is mainly an appetizer as the roll is cooled and sliced so you can enjoy it at any time of the day.

Dulce de Leche

Dulce de Leche is a caramelized milk and sugar sauce that has set the standard for dessert sauces. After trying this Argentinian invention, you will definitely feel the urge to go to the nearest market and buy jars of it before heading home. You will usually find the sauce accompanied by all the great desserts like flan, but you will not truly enjoy it unless you try it on helado or ice-cream. Argentinian ice-cream is already heavenly with a lot of thickness and a creamy taste, but it’s something else entirely when combined with Dulce de Leche. Enjoy!
