Munich, Garmisch & Salzburg: A Tale of 3 Cities

The journey is often far more interesting than the destination

As a #Musafir, you’ll agree that the journey is often far more interesting than the destination. It is during that journey where you lay the foundations for new relationships, forge new memories and discover new perspectives. It is with the prospect of new views that you should embark on a voyage that spans from Munich & Garmisch in Germany to Salzburg in Austria and back.

You’ve read all about Munich's winter markets, castles & medieval gates, public parks & beautiful architecture in our previous blogs, so let's head South towards the Alpine region of Garmisch. Jointly known as Garmisch-Partenkirchen since 1935 when 2 towns merged to form one of Germany’s most famous ski resorts, the area is home to Germany’s highest peak the Zugspitze which is accessed by cable car and a cogwheel train. The Observation Deck at the peak of the Zugspitze - also known as the Top of Germany - boasts a breathtaking view which covers over 400 mountain peaks across 4 countries.

While you’re at Garmisch, don’t miss the chance for a trip to Eibsee, which is vibrant in glorious colours throughout the year but becomes a frozen realm of ice and snow during the winter season.

Some of the more exciting activities in Garmisch - whether you’re travelling solo or in a group with friends or family - that will warm your heart include:

  • Winter in the Park - a cheery event set until the 15th of January with food trucks and lights sparkling in the evening until 9 PM. Did we mention that entry is free?
  • The Kandahar Descent - home to the Winter Olympics, Garmisch-Partenkirchen offers daredevils the Kandahar Descent to test their nerves of steel. A run of 3,300m starting at a height of 1,690m, this adrenaline packed challenge brings with it top speeds of up to 130 km/h at a gradient of 92%.
  • Ski Touring - enjoy the peace and quiet beauty of nature in the raw. Set with the backdrop of the Bavarian Alps, Garmisch-Partenkirchen offers the ultimate in breathtaking views and pure fun in descents on the powder snow.

If you’re looking for a comfortable trip with both feet firmly planted on the ground, take a gander at Salzburg in Austria. Just 3+ hours from Munich by train, Salzburg is the city of Mozart and the von Trapp family. Salzburg’s Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and its River Cruise should be at the top of your travel checklist.

Another unmissable experience is the candlelight dinner at the Salzburg Fortress’ Panorama Restaurant, followed by Mozart’s most beloved works performed inside the historic castle. Other places to visit in Salzburg include Mirabell Palace, Mozart's Residence, Trinity Church, Horse Pond, Festival Halls, Hellbrunn Palace, Palace of Frohnburg, Nonnberg Abbey, and Mozart Square, to name a few. The best way to cover all these spots is through the city’s hop-on-hop-off tour.
